Succeed with a Great Smile - A Case for Cosmetic Dentistry

by Randy Alvarez

“The key to success in business and in life is the ability to talk and smile.” – When I was 18 a very successful business man gave me this advice. I believe in many ways it’s true.

Let me begin by pointing out that I believe a smile is very important. I should have titled this blog entry ‘A Case for Smiling’ because it's not necessarily about strait teeth, perfect gums or bright white teeth. It's about confidence and presenting yourself in a happy way.

About 90% of what we present to others physically is covered by clothing most of the time. Our faces on the other hand are always showing and our teeth are right in the center.  We can agree that smiles are associated with happiness and positivity and because of this people who smile showing their teeth,  stick out in our society as being positive and happy. Often what we remember about a person are these impressions of attitudes, associating a positive attitude with a friendly smile.

- It has been said that former president Jimmy Carter won the election because of his smile.

As I think back to the time I attended a Tony Robins seminar in my early twenties and I remember one of the lessons he gave the audience that night. The lesson was about how smiling makes people happy whereas normally we would think it’s the other way around. Let me explain:  he had the entire audience try to smile showing their teeth and think about something negative…it was very hard to do. Experts agree that the simple act of smiling improves your mood, makes you happy and it makes others happy too.

I interview people on a regular basis for different job opportunities within my two companies and the applicants who smile and show their teeth (not a closed mouth smile) stand out as being positive and confident individuals.  I always tell my doctors who appear on my show to talk and smile. Not smiling is an ambivalent expression. It can make you look stuck up, serious, full of yourself, miserable etc. etc.  Today try smiling showing your teeth and notice how people react to you.

We know smiling is important but for some people it is uncomfortable. If you don’t like your smile you won’t smile very often.  My case for cosmetic dentistry is a simple one; if you don’t like your smile do something about it.  Life is too long to go without smiling. Find a cosmetic dentist with at least 20 good before-and-after photos and make the improvements you desire.

Consider the story of a young man who did not like his smile so he always looked unhappy, unconfident and shy.  He decided to do something about his yellow crooked smile, he went to a cosmetic dentist and ended up with 8 upper and 8 lower veneers. He smiled from ear to ear all day after the procedure. With his smile he began to attract new positive people in his life. He got a better job and was promoted because of the positive attitude he projected and the smile he flashed everywhere.  He doubled his income. With his new found confidence he met a beautiful woman and married her.  He continued earning more money because of his smile and was able to send his kids to the finest schools, get them orthodontics and the cycle continued in their lives.  His destiny and his children's destinies where changed because of cosmetic dentistry.

Even if you can’t afford veneers, bonding, or bleaching for your teeth, start smiling and your life will change! With intention the money will follow.  Can it be this simple?   - It all starts with a smile.
